poveglia_italy_island.jpg

Poveglia Island, Venice, Italy

This small, secluded island sits just south of Venice and has a sick (literally) and twisted history. Back when the bubonic plague was wiping out entire populations, the infected were quarantined off to Poveglia Island to live out the rest of their days. The hospital on the island was used as an insane asylum where the doctor would conduct brutal experiments on the residents. The doctor eventually jumped (or was pushed) off the bell tower and met his demise. The ghosts of his patients can still be heard, and felt, creeping around the island.

Recoleta Cemetery, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Upon visiting the Recoleta Cemetery, one grave that is a must-see is that of Rufina Cambaceres, a young girl that was said to be buried alive. Born into a wealthy family, Rufina’s life came to a tragic end when she suddenly collapsed. Doctors pronounced her dead, and her body was placed in a coffin and sealed in her mausoleum. Days after Rufina’s funeral, a cemetery worker noticed the coffin was moved and lid broken in several places. When he opened the coffin, he found several scratch marks inside. As the legend goes, Rufina woke up in her coffin after having been mistakenly pronounced dead and tried to break free, but suffocated to death. Rufina’s heartbroken father rebuilt her tomb to portray her opening the door to her own grave. At night, her gruesome shadow roams the cemetery and unearths dead bodies to ensure they haven’t suffered the same terrible fate.
