Europe’s New Requirements: Entry/Exit System (EES)

Europe’s New Requirements: Entry/Exit System (EES)

WHAT TRAVELERS NEED TO KNOW

A new automated system is being introduced across Europe’s borders. Here’s what it is, what to expect, and how to prepare for a smooth arrival.

WHAT IS THE EU ENTRY/EXIT SYSTEM (EES)?

EES is a new digital system that will automatically register non-EU travelers each time they enter or exit the Schengen Area—a collection of European countries that operate as one seamless travel region—for a short stay.

DIGITAL RECORDS

Your entry and exit dates will be recorded electronically

STAY TRACKING

The system tracks the length of your stay to help ensure compliance with entry rules.

BIOMETRIC DATA

Fingerprints and a photo will be collected (periodically).

KEY THINGS TO KNOW

ROLLING LAUNCH

EES started rolling out as of April 10, 2026 and will continue to be put in place around the Schengen Area.

LONGER LINES AT FIRST

Allow extra time when arriving as the new system is rolled out.

DATA PRIVACY

EES is operated under strict European Union data protection regulations. Your data will be securely stored and used only for border management and security.

PERIODIC BIOMETRICS

After your initial entry, you wont need to provide all bio-metics on every trip—only once every few years.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE BORDER

ARRIVAL

Proceed to border control as usual.

BIOMETRIC REGISTRATION

On your first visit, your fingerprints and photo will be taken as well as some question about your trip.

DIGITAL RECORDING

Your entry is recorded automatically. No passport stamp needed!

DEPARTURE

Your exit will also be recorded when you leave the Schengen Area.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Will this slow down my arrival in Europe?

Possibly at first. During the initial rollout, travelers may experience slightly longer wait times at border control due to the new registration process. Over time, the system is designed to improve efficiency.

What information will be collected?

When you first enter the Schengen Area after EES is implemented, border authorities will collect: Your entry/exit details, a facial image, and your fingerprints. This replaces manual passport stamping.

Will I need to do this every time I travel?

No. Your biometric data will be stored securely and reused for future trips for a defined period, meaning you won’t need to repeat the full process each time.

What if I’m visiting multiple countries in Europe?

You will complete the EES process at your first point of entry into the Schengen Area. After that, travel between Schengen countries will continue without additional border checks.

Will this affect my cruise or Enrichment Journey?

Not significantly. If your travels begins in Europe, you will complete the EES process upon arrival. Cruise lines and tour operators will continue to manage logistics as usual.

Is this the same as ETIAS?

No. These are two separate systems: EES records your entry and exit at the border while ETIAS will be a pre-travel authorization requirement. As of now, ETIAS is not yet in effect.

What happens if I overstay my visit?

EES will automatically track the length of your stay. Travelers are still subject to the existing rule of 90 days within a 180-day period for short stays in the Schengen Area. Overstaying may result in penalties or future travel restrictions.

Do I need to be concerned about traveling to Europe?

No. This system is simply a modernization of border procedures. With a little extra time planned for arrival, your travel experience should remain smooth and enjoyable.
