The Temple of Heaven, China
The complex history accompanying these stunning religious and imperial buildings is nothing short of intriguing. Located in southern Beijing, the Temple of Heaven is a prime example of ancient China’s traditional and superstitious culture. Witness the altar where the Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties prayed and offered sacrifices for a good harvest in the year ahead. The Emperor himself performed the secretive ceremonies, ensuring the future of his people would be rich and prosperous. If he failed, a terrible omen was said to spread across the nation. The Temple of Heaven became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1998 and was aptly described as “a masterpiece of architecture and landscape design which simply and graphically illustrates a cosmogony of great importance for the evolution of one of the world’s great civilizations.”
