Have you ever wondered what it would be like to embark on a South African safari? Let us take you on a “virtual tour” through photos of a day in South Africa on a safari, and all of the little surprises that can emerge along the way.
Located on the southern tip of one of the most diverse continents in the world, South Africa is a stunning terrain filled with endless possibilities and striking adventure. Known for its abundant wildlife, this world-class travel destination offers once-in-a-lifetime experiences not found anywhere else.
ADVENTURE KICKS OFF IN CAPE TOWN
Most South African vacations start here, in Cape Town, the hub for beautiful views, vibrant entertainment, and gripping history. Set off on a moving visit to Robben Island, or take a quick walking tour of the nearby Bo-Kaap neighborhood, filled with colorful houses and unique local culture. Walk the narrow cobblestoned streets for eye-widening views of Table Mountain in the background.
SET OFF INTO THE WILD AT KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
Head to Kruger National Park—the world’s greatest national park for seeing wildlife. More than 137 mammals and 500 varieties of birds roam freely on these lands. The landscape alone is an expansive 12,107 sq miles. with several roads, guided wildlife activities, and accommodations—both luxurious and budget-conscious. Here is where the real adventure starts. Set off in an off-road vehicle with your guide whose eyes (and ears) are trained for movement.
THE FIRST SIGHTING!
Your guide pulls up close to a nearby watering hole. The area is enlivened with birdlife, hippos, crocs, elephants, and more. It’s a popular gathering place for fauna and draws animals near and far. Suddenly, out of the thicket, a leopard emerges. The first sighting of the day! Can you spot the second leopard?
As you pull past the trees, an expansive field presents itself. Gasps can be heard from those who spot it first—a herd of elephants grazing peacefully in the wilderness!
The friendly giants watch as the vehicle slowly approaches to pass them by. They continue to play and almost seem to start posing as the vehicle slows and cameras emerge.
The perfect photo op doesn’t exi…
RETURN TO CAMP TO RELAX (IT IS A VACATION, AFTER ALL)
On the way back to camp, giraffes can be seen on the trail in the distance. As they hear the vehicle approach, they begin to scatter. Their long legs take them far very fast, but not before you are able to capture this unique moment between the loving couple.
As you approach camp, the cool shade looks more inviting than ever before. Now it’s time to settle in for a nourishing meal and take a moment to bask in the expansive views. While at camp, opt for an immersive cultural activity or enjoy the camp’s amenities.
AS THE SUN SETS, THE TIME COMES FOR A NIGHT SAFARI
After embarking for part two of your safari, the plains seem to shift colors as the sun sets and an amber glow lights up the fields. The heat of the day is cooling and the residual light fades quickly (it’s a good thing you packed a light jacket). At last, rhinos are spotted as they graze for their last meal before retiring for the day.
Your guide continues to the next hot spot for activity, another watering hole filled with wildlife! A bloat of hippopotamuses can be seen bathing in the water, with eyes above the waterline, always watching, never bothered.
As you drive around the watering hole to the other side, you spot a herd of Cape buffalo eagerly entering for a drink.
As the light continues to fade, sighting ALL of the “Big Five” has become a serious quest. So far, you’ve collected the memories of sighting 4 of the 5 animals: elephant, leopard, rhino, and buffalo…but there’s one elusive animal missing. Your guide is on a mission—their experience tells them exactly where this animal likes to hang out, especially after a long day of hunting.
DUSK IS COMING TO AN END, BUT NOT BEFORE YOUR FINAL SIGHTING!
Your guide continues on for a few more minutes to a “secret” hideout for your final sighting. Suddenly, the vehicle stops, and your guide jolts up into a standing position. Everyone starts rubbernecking in an attempt to get a sense of what is happening before the guide points at bushes and whispers loudly “Lion.”
It only takes a few moments before your eyes lock-in and you witness this majestic creature. You instantly smile through the lens of your camera as you flick away a series of photos, amazed that the lion is lying belly-up like it’s some sort of a harmless kitten.
Very shortly after hearing the tourists arrive, the lion decides his peaceful sanctuary has been compromised and begins to seek solitude elsewhere.
But not before turning around for a pose for his very captivated audience.
That was it! That completes the “Big 5” sightings. What an adventure! Now, your guide starts the trek back to camp where you can share photos and recall the day’s most exciting moments around the campfire with your fellow travelers.
